An apprentice at Reigate & Banstead Borough Council has won the Gold award for Best Apprentice of the Year at this year’s SME Surrey Business Awards.

Tilly Newton, an Environmental Health apprentice was honoured during an awards ceremony held at the Holiday Inn, Shepperton on Thursday 12 September.

She joins a select number of other successful apprentices to have won the coveted prize since its inception.

Unforgettable experience 

Speaking shortly after the awards ceremony, a beaming Tilly said: "It is truly a day that I won’t forget. My cheeks are aching from smiling so much!

"Winning this award just wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing support of my amazing managers and colleagues in Environmental Health, and other colleagues across the Council.

“I can vouch that apprenticeships create so many opportunities and mine has set me up for a brilliant career ahead.

Importance of apprenticeships 

Katie Jackson, Environmental Health Manager at Reigate & Banstead, and Tilly’s line manager was all praise for the apprentice’s achievements since joining the Council.

She said: “This incredible achievement reflects Tilly's dedication and hard work. Since joining the council, she has shown exceptional dedication and skill in her role. Earlier this year, it was confirmed that she will graduate with an outstanding first-class honours degree in Environmental Health, which is remarkable.

“This award showcases the importance of apprenticeships and professional development at the council both for individuals and the communities we serve. A huge well done to Tilly and to everyone involved!”.

The SME Surrey Business Awards support and raise the profile of industrious, hardworking, and enterprising Small and Medium Enterprises in Surrey. The Awards are made up of various allowing any successful business in Surrey to enter. All entries are judged by up to four of the national panel of judges.
