The play areas at Fairfax Avenue, Redhill, Somerset Road, Meadvale, and Woodmansterne Rec will be getting a revamp as part of Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s play replacement programme.

The upgraded play areas will have new equipment, including climbing frames, swings and roundabouts and a zip wire, alongside some existing play features and improvements to landscaping so that children of all ages and abilities can learn and play together. Inclusive features will include low level and wide access points for the equipment, as well as sensory play elements.

Use of recycled materials and play panels with a renewable energy theme have also been incorporated into the design of the new play areas.

Cllr Nadean Moses, Executive Member for Environment and Sustainability said: “Outdoor play is crucial for children’s physical and mental health and I hope the children who will be using these three play areas, along with their parents and carers, will enjoy exploring the new equipment together. Our ongoing investment in the borough’s 55 play areas helps to make sure all children can access spaces where they can develop their confidence, their imagination and their sense of adventure.”

What’s coming

  • Fairfax Avenue play area: New, inclusive equipment includes a jumbo springy, buddy board and roundabout, alongside a new climbing frame, zip wire and adventure trail. Work is due to commence 2 September.
  • Woodmansterne Rec play area: The complete upgrade of this play area uses sustainable materials, including recycled ocean plastic (such as fishing nets). The 12 new pieces of equipment with 50 plus play features include a treetop tower climbing frame and sensory trail. Work is due to commence 11 September.
  • Somerset Road play area: Play panels about renewable energy will be installed alongside new swings, a roundabout, a four-seater seesaw, and much more. Start date to be confirmed.

The upgrades for each play area are expected to take between four and six weeks. For safety, the play areas under construction will be cordoned off with Heras fencing and signage during the works and the new equipment will be able to open following a post-installation inspection.
