Today an important milestone was celebrated at the Council’s new flagship development on Marketfield Way, Redhill, which will include a multi-screen cinema, shops, restaurants and homes.
If you’ve visited Redhill town centre recently, you can’t have failed to notice the great progress being made on the Marketfield Way and High Street site.
The concrete frame of the residential block has now reached its full height of 13 floors, and as the tradition goes, reaching the highest point of the construction was celebrated with a ‘Topping Out’ event. The occasion was marked by a yew tree branch being placed on the top floor, accompanied by a toast to the future success of the scheme and the hard work of everyone helping to deliver it.
The event was presided over by the Mayor and attended by the Council’s development partners and members of the Redhill Business Guild. It included a tour of the building and a sneak preview of the new multi-screen cinema.
Cllr Jill Bray, Mayor of Reigate & Banstead, said: “It’s a delight to see the excellent progress being made at the development. Today we’re not only celebrating that the construction has reached its highest point, we’re also celebrating the great work of the many people involved in this significant project for Redhill. It will give residents and workers a fantastic new leisure destination for day and evening entertainment, boost the local economy, create hundreds of jobs and provide modern new homes.”
Works started on site in January 2020 and are on schedule to be completed in late summer 2022. The Council and its contractor VINCI Building, who are based in Reigate, are committed to promoting opportunities for local businesses throughout the construction. To date, over £1.7 million of contracts have been awarded to suppliers from the local area, including Tone Scaffolding based in Redhill and JJ Skips based in Betchworth.
VINCI’s Regional Director Jason Griffiths said: “We are delighted to achieve such a crucial milestone [the ‘topping out’] of the structure of this flagship development at Marketfield Way, Redhill. The entire team has worked really hard to deliver this part of the project ahead of plan - well done!”
“It is a pleasure to work with Reigate & Banstead Borough Council and the wider professional team on this flagship project. We hope that the development helps the local community and provides welcome prosperity to the neighbourhood when it completes next year”.
Reigate & Banstead Borough Council is in negotiations with a number of potential tenants for the commercial units and is currently finalising terms with its selected cinema operator and a large retailer. All the residential apartments have been purchased by Kooky, bringing their boutique brand to Redhill. The rental apartments will be available in autumn/winter 2022.
Howard Crocker, Managing Director of Kooky, said: “We are excited to bring Kooky to Redhill through this project with the Council and VINCI. Our boutique rental apartments offer stylish design and incredible service. We will be opening Kooky Redhill at the end of 2022 and will have 150 apartments available. We can’t wait to show Redhill what renting Kooky is all about.”
The landmark development, commissioned by Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, includes a new multi-screen cinema, shops, restaurants and 150 new homes and is central to realising plans to develop an evening economy in Redhill. The project is funded by Reigate & Banstead Borough Council with a contribution of £2m from the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership.
