Safer Streets funding, secured by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner in 2023 has funded an 18-month programme of activity which includes:

  • practical improvements in the town centre informed by research with local residents
  • targeted youth outreach work by YMCA East Surrey, and two-thirds of the cost of their new youth bus
  • ASB training for council officers and other community partners, such as Street Pastors

You can find more information about some of these projects below and in the Safer Streets newsletter [link]

Practical improvements

Solar lights in Memorial Park

In July 2024 the council installed new solar lights in Redhill's Memorial Park. The lights are programmed to come on at sunset for three hours each evening and then to be triggered by movement for the rest of the night. After reviewing their performance for a few months, the council installed a further five lights in October 2025.

Fairfax Avenue recreation area

Following the refurbishment of the play area in 2024, further improvement work to address anti-social behaviour has been agreed with local residents, which includes:

  • solar lighting for the play area and grassed area
  • removing existing shelter and replacing with new additional seating
  • New tree and wildflower planting

Bleed kits

Two bleed kits are due to be installed alongside defibrillators in the town centre. Similar to first aid kits, they contain dressings, tourniquets, gloves and other trauma care items, that can be used by members of the public to treat someone for severe bleeding while waiting for paramedics to arrive. Bleed kits can be lifesaving in many situations, including knife attacks and road traffic accidents.

Community outreach

Y-bus and youth outreach

Safer Redhill has provided two-thirds of the funding for the YMCA East Surrey’s Y Bus and funded four youth outreach sessions per week in Redhill,

Mural in Memorial Park

Carrington school pupils and local artist, Uncle Stubble, worked together on a colourful community mural to brighten up a forgotten corner of Memorial Park. The project encourages young people to feel involved in and proud of their local area; as well as making it more welcoming for all.

Mentoring young people

Ment4, who specialise in youth mentoring, are working in Carrington School and East Surrey College on a mentoring programme for young people. One-to-one support over a four-month period is being offered to selected 11 to 18 year-olds and they are also delivering assemblies.

Self defence with Redhill Boxing Club

A five-week women’s self defence course took place at Redhill Boxing Club and introduced women to a wide range of practical ways to handle real-life potential dangers. Police officers also attended the sessions to talk about the support they offer and to give out safety alarms.
