What is Domestic Abuse?
Domestic abuse is an incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behaviour. In the majority of cases, this is from a partner or ex-partner, but also by a family member or carer.
Domestic abuse is not limited to just physical violence. It can be psychological, sexual, emotional or financial. It can happen to anyone regardless of their background, culture, gender, sexual orientation or circumstances.
Domestic abuse is a crime and it usually happens behind closed doors. Domestic abuse leaves people and households feeling powerless to stop the issue. Do not hesitate to contact the police and report any incidents. You can contact Surrey Police on 101 or dial 999 in an emergency. You can press 55 to tell the 999 operator that you are in an emergency and can’t speak out loud.
You are not alone in this situation and it is not your fault. Yours and your family's safety must come first. We understand that it’s not easy to accept that a loved one can behave like this. Often because you cannot justify or explain the behaviour, you assume that it is your fault. You are not to blame for the abuse.
