Downsizing your home
Over time, some people find that their home has become too big. Your children may have left home and you are now affected by the bedroom tax. You may feel that a smaller home would be easier for you to look after, and cheaper to heat. We may be able to help.
If you are a tenant of a housing association in Reigate & Banstead with one or more spare bedrooms, you may qualify for our downsizing scheme. The scheme is aimed at providing support and financial assistance to tenants who wish to transfer to smaller, manageable, and more affordable homes.
Our aim is to help people wanting to transfer to a smaller home whilst releasing family-sized properties that are in high demand for families that need them most.
The scheme offers the following benefits:
- A one off ‘home setup payment’ to be spent on the setting up of the new home. This will be £1000 per bedroom released, up to a maximum of £3000
- Support of a personal assistant who will ensure everything goes smoothly and relieve the stress of moving. This can include:
- liaising with removers
- setting up utilities
- assisting with benefit claims
- If required, a packing and removal service. This can include:
- disposal of unwanted items
- taking apart and rebuilding furniture
- Access to a 'DIY' handyman service. This can include:
- fitting curtain rails and blinds
- putting up shelves
- connecting appliances
- setting up your flat-packed furniture
