1. What is biodiversity net gain (BNG)?
Biodiversity net gain (BNG) is an approach introduced under the Environment Act 2021 (legislation.gov.uk). It ensures that any new developments leave nature in a better state than it was before, which means creating more habitats for wildlife and improving the quality of existing ones. This could involve planting new trees, creating wildflower meadows, or restoring ponds.
Why does it matter?
-
Connecting the dots: BNG doesn't just create more nature, it helps connect existing habitats and promotes a healthier ecosystem.
-
Saving our wildlife: the State of Nature Report (2023) (stateofnature.org.uk) shows that the abundance of 753 terrestrial and freshwater species have declined by approximately 19% in the UK since 1970, and nearly 1 in 6 species (16%) are now threatened with extinction. The decline in species is alarming and BNG is a powerful tool to reverse this trend by creating bigger and better habitats, which offer more food, shelter, and breeding grounds for a wider variety of animals and plants.

Working together for a sustainable future: by supporting BNG, we're investing in a healthier environment for ourselves, future generations, and the creatures we share our community with.
