4. Changes to how we collect some bulky waste items

The following changes are being made to how we collect some bulky waste items, this is to better manage persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and their impact on our environment.

Items containing POPs will now require special handling and disposal procedures. Please read the updated guidance below.

This change is crucial for the health of our community and the planet. Let’s work together to keep our environment clean and safe.

Household items that may contain POPs:

  • cushions and beanbags
  • sofa, armchairs, sofa beds animal beds and futons
  • chairs containing fabric or soft padding
  • stools, pouffes and ottomans
  • headboards containing fabric or soft padding
  • upholstered materials including any part made with leather, synthetic leather, other fabric or foam

Household items that are not likely to contain POPs:

  • items that are not upholstered such as wooden, plastic or metal chairs that do not contain cushioned or fabric back, seat or arms
  • mattresses and beds
  • curtains and blinds
  • carpets

Please follow the guidance below:

  • please do not dismantle or cut up these items.
  • if any items are damaged, ripped or torn, please securely cover the damage with sheeting, tarp or tape. This is to reduce the risk of POPs leaking into the environment. Any damaged items that are not securely covered will not be collected.
  • we have to collect these items separately. To help with this please leave items that may contain POPs separate from other bulky waste items you may have requested to be taken.
